STOP PRESS! – Latest news – Tues 26th March 2024

Stumperlowe Probus had a groundbreaking meeting on Monday, 25th March, when for the first time our speaker was ‘Zoomed’ on to the large screen at Fulwood Sports Club for a live audience of 47 members and guests to enjoy a fascinating presentation on the Lodge Moor Prisoner of War camp.

Our speaker was Bob Moore, Professor Emeritus of 20th Century European History at Sheffield University, who was talking to us from his home in South Oxfordshire. Prof Moore detailed the international importance of Lodge Moor during two World Wars.

Our chairman, Dick Birks, introduced Prof Moore, who also took many questions from the floor, and it proved a highly successful experiment thanks to the work put in by our IT expert Stephen Lumb and other members of the committee. Although we had speakers via Zoom during the lockdown days, when members were viewing individually on their home computers, this took technology a stage further with a camera and microphone strategically placed in the clubhouse which enabled Prof Moore to interact with the whole audience.

John Hopkins’s blog on the presentation will appear shortly under Previous Talks.

Because of Easter, our next meeting will not be until Monday, 15th April, when Martin Rowley returns to speak to us (in person, in the clubhouse) on 1960s motor sport.

Cricket enthusiasts amongst our membership will be at Owlerton Stadium later that same day (15th April) for the Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ annual dinner when the guest speaker will be former England captain David Gower OBE.
