About Stumperlowe Probus

The word PROBUS is an acronym made up from two words professional and business and is the name given to clubs designed for the fellowship of their retired and semi-retired gentlemen members from the professional and business spheres. Briefly their roots can be traced back to clubs formed in Canada and the USA in the 1920s. Probus clubs started in the UK in the 1960s, largely through the encouragement of ex Rotarians, although there is no affiliation with Rotary. Indeed Probus clubs pride themselves on their independence and freedom from service responsibilities.

Having spent a very active working life, mixing with like minded colleagues, customers, clients, students or patients, and then retiring, can be very daunting, leaving one in a mental vacuum. Probus clubs overcome this problem, providing friendship and mental stimulus. They do not form part of a secret society and they have no religious or political leanings.

Stumperlowe Probus Club was formed 40 years ago on the 21st March1977 and in its first year enrolled  40 members.  The club meets weekly on Monday mornings to have coffee and then listen to a speaker. Topics cover a very wide range of subjects and stimulate lively discussions. A number of members have given talks on their specialist fields, which has shown the depth of knowledge the group holds. Outside visits are sometimes organised and we usually have an annual lunch which is always well attended.

Amongst our membership we have Professors, Medical Doctors, Engineers, Metallurgists, and Accountants, not to mention senior roles from both public and private sectors. Joining Stumperlowe Probus Club is an enjoyable way to spend Monday mornings with like minded people. It will provide you with the opportunity to expand your interests and to discuss a wide variety of topics.

If you think you might be interested in joining Stumperlowe Probus then call the Membership Host who will be delighted to accompany you on your initial visit. We operate a “Try before you buy” policy and by that we mean that you can come to three meetings before deciding whether you would like to join Stumperlowe Probus or not.
