27th April 2012 Visit to Sheffield Assay Office

Sheffield Assay OfficeA very enjoyable and educational visit to the Assay Office was undertaken by members and guests. The history of the Assay Office was given by Emma Parageen, resident Librarian and Curator, covering the period from instigation of Assay offices back in 1300 to the present day. Truly they must have been the first consumer rights organisation! The lovely story of the mark for Sheffield being a Crown (now the Tudor Rose) and for Birmingham being an anchor, was due to the fact that the offices were formulated in the Crown and Anchor pub in London! A tour of the facilities followed and some had their jewellery X rayed to prove their worth!
